Sam's discussion with Chuck about Lilith and everything? Heartbreaking. Dean praying? Heartbreaking. “I’ve never asked for anything. Not a damned thing. But now I’m asking.” (guys, it was LAST week you were riffing off 'It's a Wonderful Life')

CHUCK. What a great character. He planted himself pretty firmly into the mytharc, didn't he? I loved that he was just a regular guy that just happened to start seeing visions. I loved the little hints that he was a prophet--his stripey robes (ala Moses), his beard, his disbelief that his visions were real...AWESOME job with all of that.

Plus he's a likeable character! I really felt his despair and frustration at the end, when he wanted to warn Sam and Dean, but couldn't (thanks a lot Zechariah...) But I think I love him best for saying to Sam what I only wish I could: that the demon blood is not a good thing, that it makes Sam feel good--and Sam knows it, even if he won't admit it--and that he's truly sorry that Sam has to carry this burden. I think I want to have sex behind the junior high with that moment, because it was SO WELCOME and WONDERFUL to have. Chuck, I'll read your prophecies any day. Just...maybe see about getting a more realistic pic of the boys on the cover, mmkay?

BOYZ!! I fear how much worse it's going to get between you two before it gets better. Dean came *THIS close* to walking out on you this time, Sam, only to stop and PRAY for help instead. Why do I fear that next time, even a prayer for help won't keep Dean around? I was totally clutching my hair in my hands when Dean started to walk out the door...god, when he put his duffel down on the chair, I think I screamed out of sheer relief.

The fact that The Prophet Chuck (btw, Show? You're using both 'gospel' and 'prophet' wrong. I'm just sayin'. Use a dictionary) didn't write down about Sammy's little blood-drinking habit? Is why the angels don't know about it, or about exactly what is going on: they've only read the gospel, that's the extent of their knowledge of the whole sitch!! God isn't telling them anything.

Sam keeps getting scarier, even as he's getting more and more sympathetic. That gigantic polack is kicking it out of the freaking PARK with the acting, man.

And Dean just keeps getting hotter. It shouldn't be possible, and yet every week, it happens. Oh and 'Cas' is noticing it, too! The Littlest Angel is freaking head-over-heels in love with Dean. SO in love. Who can blame him?

I wonder...I just wonder...is this supposed to be a double fakeout, in conjunction with last week's episode? Orchestrated by Zechariah? Last week's ep a mindgame to set Dean straight, and this week's to set Sam straight? I don't think so. But it's an interesting thought. What I do know for certain, is that I do not trust Zechariah. Not as far as I could throw the Ginormotron. Nuh-uh. No way.

THREE WEEKS UNTIL MORE SHOW!! Meeep. Oh, and don't worry about the next new episode and the third Winchester brother...the ep's titled 'Jump the Shark', so I don't think we need to fear a Dawn scenario. My prediction is that the third bro is going to die at the end of the episode: he's the 'someone close to the boys' who's going to die.

It's been a hell of a season for Supernatural fans. On top of their individual apocalyptic traumas, Our Boys have been estranged and distant from each other. It's been hard on them, and it's been harder on us, but last week's episode appears to have given fans hope. Oh, sure, NOW they have the budget to buy a goddamn song. No fucking cock rock all fucking season, but for a fucking COMEDY episode, they can afford a song. A NOT COCK ROCK song. A Kinks song, which I can't imagine was cheap.

Wow, the dialogue is seriously bad between Sam and the other geek. I don't think the writers actually know any real geeks. Because real geeks are funnier than this. Smarter than Ghost Facers, too. Sorry, just painfully bad writing. Comedy FAIL. They always, always write the comedy too broadly. Tell me this is going to be the last comedic episode of the season, pleeeease.

ETA: Some of my theory about this ep:

So I was on the TWoP forums and I said this:
'Normal Again', except we don't get the resolution. DAMMIT, Kripke!!

And somebody else responded:
Resolution? How so? Do you not remember the mind-fuck that was "Normal Again"? Buffy rocking in the corner, waiting for another tranq?

And here's my theory:
The resolution I meant was the resolution of the character's inner struggle. Buffy resolved her struggle, in both worlds: she took Joyce's advice and believed in her 'madness'. We didn't see Dean make a decision; the last words spoken were part of Zach's spiel, and Dean's face was irresolute as it cut to the end credits.

I don't think Zach is the hard-ass-but-a-good-general guy he seems. There are a couple of clues to this: one is the fact that he maintains his Corporate Doublespeak right up to the end. Does anyone really think that Truth with a capital T is going to be phrased that way, in Kripke's world? Nuhuh. Also, listen to the music running under the final couple of minutes: it's very uneasy music.

I seem to be the only one who thinks this, but I think Dean is not supposed to buy into Zach's version of reality. I don't think Dean is going to 'win' by toeing the angelic party line and being the Righteous Man. He's going to try it for a while, but it won't work. Nor is Sam supposed to toe the demonic party line. They're going to have to create a third way to fight, a Winchester way, and that's what's going to win the final battle. Probably in S5, not S4. That's the way I read things.

(Also, how frakkin' adorable was it that Sam the Ginormotron didn't even fit into that cubicle? His shoulders stuck out, his head stuck out, he couldn't fit his legs under the desk...HEEE!!)

I love this show. That is all.

I just got a brand-new set of really good earbuds, and I'm breaking them in with the 1970 original recording of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. Which completely and utterly ROCKS. Ian Gillan! Barry Dennen! Mike D'Abo!! Murray Head, man, shit. Wow. This album is possibly the only true religious experience I've ever had.

And it also reminded me that the guy who played Peter in Jewison's 1973 movie version, was a big porn star and director. (You knew this, right?) Wow. Sam&Dean's lives SUCK in a truly epic manner.

And I don't know if it's the writing or the acting, but I keep having to remind myself that Dean is NOT, in actuality, a dick--because he sure does act like one a lot. (I don't think that's a very good thing. Kripke? Are you listening? Nah, probably not. You see, in an ideal world, there are writers who can write dialogue, and actors who can act out emotions, that would indicate subtly to we the audience that Dean's assholeishness is, you know, a fake? His armor against the normal world?

These are the same guys, Andrew Dabb & Daniel Loflin, who wrote "Yellow Fever". They seem to enjoy making Dean a one-dimensional character. I hope they up their game pretty soon. Are they scheduled to write any more eps this season?)

Falling In Love

So I was just watching this vid, which is pretty much everything great and awful about SPN wrapped up in one little ball o' pretty. (It's the 'Wayward Son' promo for, what, S3?) And I finally fell, wholeheartedly, completely and utterly in love with Supernatural.

I mean, it's been coming for a long time. I first started watching S1 and S4 simultaneously in September; since then, I've followed along with Season 4, and watched S1-S3 all the way through three times. But I've resisted falling in love with the show. I kept saying I was just filling in the gap in Torchwood, or I was a fan but I wasn't, you know, fannish about Show, or it was fun but not serious, I mean, Supernatural is WAY too cheesy to be taken seriously...basically, I was starting to sound like Jack Harkness denying that he has deep feelings for Ianto.

And sitting here watching that vid and listening to that cheesy song, I realized something:

That moment when you fall in love with a fandom? When you get, finally, what it's all about, why people adore this show/movie/book/anime, what the passionate possessive LUST for it is all about? What you fall in love with at that moment isn't really the show. It's the Platonic Form of the show, not the show itself; it's what that show could be, not what it is. It's what fanfic and reviews and recaps and picspam and vids and squeeing are all trying to capture.

And, so, yeah. I get it now.

Supernatural: Ep.4.11 Review

SAMMY SLEEPS IN THE ANGELIC WET SPOT, FTW.

This was a post-hiatus, mid-season episode that did just what it should do:

It grounded us right back in the roots of the show, with the boys and a MotW and a great, creepy, horror-movie atmosphere. That kind of resettling is necessary after a hiatus, and before the season takes off into the later episodes, when the meta-arc will necessarily take over most of the storylines.

It also reminded us of exactly where we are in the season mytharc, and gave us a bit more useful information to be going forward with, by telling us exactly how much Dean was corrupted by Hell. That's critical info: it creates tension by making us wonder why Heaven chose him, a corrupted human well on his way to becoming a demon; and because it sets up Dean's enormous need for forgiveness.

Dean's need for forgiveness is crucial. He can't end his long dark night of the soul just by 'working through his issues', or by Sam comforting him. Human forgiveness isn't going to mean anything to Dean. Dean's forgiveness is going to have to come from Heaven...or rather, from its angels. Castiel is going to be instrumental in healing Dean, mark my words. (Not that way! Except in my dreams...)

This ep also brought Sam and Dean much closer together than they've been so far this season, which rocked. Loved the scene with Sam waking up in the car in the beginning. Waaaaay slashy, dude, with the husky sleep voices and the intimacy and the darkness and the comfort of Baby surrounding them both. Car as womb. Love it!! Ep gave us some great loving and snarky relationship moments.

They made the MotW human so that Dean had to kill a human. Because he killed humans in Hell. Because he might have to kill Sammy the Ginormous Anti-Christ. Because Kripke wants that in the forefront of our minds as we move into the last half of the season.

On the whole, I thought the falling anvils were only made of tinfoil this ep, instead of the usual lead. And the acting, even from the guest stars, was very good. Whether or not that had anything to do with the absence of DeadEye Ruby and Anorexic Anna, I leave up to your good judgment...

I've only got two complaints: the confession scene should've been placed earlier in the ep, rather than having one more end-of-ep Leaning on Metallicar scene; and...where, oh where was my Cock Rock, Kripke? If you keep gypping me like this, all I can say is, ya damn well better make up for it by forking out for 'Bat Out of Hell' or 'Black Dog', sometime before the end of the season.

Ep.14 is going to be Slashtacular!! Sex and violence are going to be the same thing, both tools of a siren, and the (male) siren is going to infect Sam and Dean and make them ~~fuck~~ fight to the death. So that he can have the winner. *faints* Oh, show, don't do this to me unless you mean it! *faints again*

Episode 4.14 - Sex and Violence written by Catherine Humphris and directed by Charles Beeson
-Sam and Dean pose as Feds and investigate multiple cases of men who love their wives and yet murder them viciously after going to a particular strip club where is a siren is dancing.
-A man named Lenny is coerced into killing his mom after sex with a stripper (the siren).
-Sam clicks with a doctor named Cara who has hyacinths in her office. She says the murderous husbands show high levels of Oxytocin in their blood (making them feel deliriously in love. Later, after watching hours of surveillance video, the two end up bonding and then have sex.
-Dean has staked out the strip club with a fellow Fed named Nick; the two bond and talk about the hyacinths found at each crime scene. It is eventually revealed that Nick is the siren in disguise and Dean has been infected through sharing a drink with him.
-Nick brings Dean back to the hotel to let him kill Sam (he plans to take Sam's place as a trustworthy little brother); he first encourages Dean to beat Sam and then infects Sam so the boys can sort out their issues by beating up each other. The survivor goes to Nick.

Ep. 16, My Prediction:
Anorexic Anna the Angelphone is due to come back in Episode 4.16, as "an angel on the run".
I'm telling you guys, she's going to be pregnant with Dean's baby! Angels' grace = "pure creation", remember?

Summary: Set between S3 & S4. Sam doesn't know what to do with Dean's cassette tapes.

Sam kept the box of cassettes on the front seat after Dean died. Sometimes it slid onto the floor. Even there, it rattled like bones. The radio wouldn't go loud enough to drown it out, so Sam installed an iPod, then tried moving the box to the floor in back.

Finally a pair of extra speakers made enough sound, although Sam swore he could still feel the rattling of the tapes through the floorboards. But no way he was putting that box in the trunk. No fucking way.

Sam drove like he was aiming a weapon, all that burning summer.

You know that feeling you get when you're being sucked into a new fandom? That restless urge to search and explore and download and google and wiki and get stuff out of the library, until you know absolutely everything about the characters, the 'verse, the entire mythos?

In the vaccuum left by the horrifically lengthy Torchwood hiatus, I am currently being sucked into not one, but two new fandoms. Oh Obsession, you are my friend!

And what two fandoms do I pick? Only the two oldest, most complex, most contentious, enormous, fanboy-filled, retcon-happy fandoms in the Entire World.
