Falling In Love
So I was just watching this vid, which is pretty much everything great and awful about SPN wrapped up in one little ball o' pretty. (It's the 'Wayward Son' promo for, what, S3?) And I finally fell, wholeheartedly, completely and utterly in love with Supernatural.

I mean, it's been coming for a long time. I first started watching S1 and S4 simultaneously in September; since then, I've followed along with Season 4, and watched S1-S3 all the way through three times. But I've resisted falling in love with the show. I kept saying I was just filling in the gap in Torchwood, or I was a fan but I wasn't, you know, fannish about Show, or it was fun but not serious, I mean, Supernatural is WAY too cheesy to be taken seriously...basically, I was starting to sound like Jack Harkness denying that he has deep feelings for Ianto.

And sitting here watching that vid and listening to that cheesy song, I realized something:

That moment when you fall in love with a fandom? When you get, finally, what it's all about, why people adore this show/movie/book/anime, what the passionate possessive LUST for it is all about? What you fall in love with at that moment isn't really the show. It's the Platonic Form of the show, not the show itself; it's what that show could be, not what it is. It's what fanfic and reviews and recaps and picspam and vids and squeeing are all trying to capture.

And, so, yeah. I get it now.

Awwwwwwww, it was the boy's theme song that turned you into a fangirl. That song has always been heavily associated, in my head, with the boys themselves (just like I always associate "Back in Black" with Metallicar, and "God's Gonna Cut You Down" with Papa Winchester).

Yep. I iz now official fangirl!!

OK, confession time, guys: I actually saw Kansas on tour the year that song was released. Rochester, NY, in the War Memorial. My dad drove us to the show. I saw Nazareth's 'Hair of the Dog' tour, too. And Ted Nugent's 'Cat Scratch Fever' show. Why, yes, I was a redneck! Why do you ask?

I iz now official OLD fangirl!!

What do you think Bobby's would be? "Mr. Roboto?" lolz And I'm still trying to figure out what Mama's would be.

Mr. Roboto, VERY good!! *claps*

I hear Lynyrd Skynyrd when I think of Bobby. Or, oh I know, the Man in Black: Southern Comfort, Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues.

Ring of Fire would be pretty freaking funny for Mama Winchester, too!! HAHAAHA!!

Ahhhhhhh, yes, "Ring of Fire" would certainly work. Either that, or "Fire of an Unknown Origin" ... but I'll take Johnny over BOC any day.

Oooh, yes!! Two other just incredible montages...sequences...whatever. That bit with the boys in Baby after Dean rebuilds her!! And that Johnny Cash song is so freaking fantastic, what an amazing voice he had. I had this Mexican cowboy friend who'd call me up early on Saturday mornings, as he was getting in from a long night of drinking and fighting, and we'd get drunk and watch the X-Men cartoon and listen to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Good times. [/rambling]

Aaaaaanyway...there's vid I saw that has the great "music moments" from SPN...let me go see if I can find it...
Shit. No dice. I'll keep looking!

::is sad:: I wish I could find the one for "God's Gonna Cut You Down" with Papa. That was pretty good. To make it up, I bring you the the official video of that song (which is really pretty good).

Heehee, we're looking up GGCYD vids for each other at the same time! Isn't that the one with Johnny Depp?

*goes to watch*

Here's a Boondock Saints vid to the same song. FAB.

Whoooooooooooo. What a great vid. You know, I've never actually seen that flick. I think my friend Brandi almost had a stroke when I admitted that, since the brothers are Irish, and I'm all about that. lol But I get the impression that that's one of my brother's type of movies.

But...but...they're so CUTE! And so IRISH!! *g*

Yeah, it's a great movie. Lilith just introduced me to it a while back, I hadn't seen it either. It reminded me of the Sopranos, a bit, with the mix of violence and over-the-top-ness and gallows humor.

Speaking of which, have you seen the Serial Killer Meme? Apparently, I'm

What Kind of Serial Killer Would You Be?
Your Result: Disorganized and Hedonistic

You'd be an impulsive killer. You'll murder when the oppourtunity arises, then leave the body where you killed it. You'll evade capture not through intelligence, but through constant movement.
You'll kill for the sheer pleasure of killing. The aspect that you'd enjoy varies- the chase, perhaps, or torturing and abusing the victim before their death. Maybe you'd be a necrophiliac or a cannibal. Murders excite you, either emotionally or sexually. You're disgusting, man.

Word. I don't feel it for SPN but I definitely went through that when I finally let myself fall in love with Merlin. Not what it is, because that's flawed and messy and plain stupid so much of the time, but the Ideal that's in my mind and driving me to write (femslash even, good lord help me) just to try to capture it. And yep, I could lose have lost days watching Merlin and Arthur make shadows on that old cave wall. They're awfully pretty doing it.

Yeah, this just happened to you with 'Merlin', didn't it? I was thinking about that when I posted this.

What was the hook that got you into the show, and what's the Form it takes in your head? (and is 'slash' the answer to both questions?) ;)

Heh. That would make it easy, but no. There are so many slashy shows around (or maybe I just have finely tuned slashgoggles, not sure) but it takes something more to transform my fannish appreciation into fannish love. And it's something that is really hard to nail down, to be honest, but it's that something that takes me from just being idly curious about a show (i.e., wondering how they'll get out of this contrived scrape that they're in) to being genuinely interested in what's going on in the characters' heads and wanting to put them into new situations and see how they'll handle it. So the slash is a part of that (both in justifying it/squeezing it into a canonical interpretation as well as seeing it expressed in lovely, lovely porn), but it's more.

As for the hook for Merlin ... god, I wish I knew what it was, I really do. I told you I hated the first ep -- it felt like an insult to my long-held love of Arthurian legend. I watched more at a friends' insistence, but intense fannish love -- wanting to get inside the characters' heads -- really snuck up on me. I realised it was starting when I started looking forward to new episodes as much as I looked forward to Torchwood, and I first just excused it as missing TW and Doctor Who. I can't identify the exact moment when it took over my life, but I do remember washing dishes one day and debating whether Arthur would protect Merlin if he discovered his magic. It was the same feeling I had when I first started wondering what Draco would be without Voldemort. And then I went looking for fic to find out how people had addressed that. And oh dear god had they ever. *wallows*

This fandom is truly like devils-snare. Now, god help me, I'm even reading RPF in this fandom because just like the show snuck up on me, Bradley James (who plays Arthur) smacked me upside the head and made me pay attention, despite being nothing at all like my type. *facepalm*

In terms of the form my fannish love takes, I have different degrees -- a Kinsey-scale of fandom, if you will, that goes from simple appreciation to reading casually to reading obsessively to writing -- but when I get involved enough to write, it's all about the need to fix things. I think back to the stories that I've written that I like the best. In one, I was trying to make sense of JKR's horcrux nonsense. In another, I was trying to find a way for Harry and Draco to be together despite the epilogue. And you've read my Donna story where I had to fix what happened to her. And right now, I'm writing a story to see how Guinevere fits into this world where Merlin and Arthur are head over heels. Not that I don't love reading AUs, but I feel more of an impetus to write to put things right, if that makes any sense. Slash is usually a part of it, but not always, and not only.

OK, I could probably go on, but this is tl/dr already so I will spare you. All I'll say is that I'm happy you discovered your fannish love of SPN because there's nothing quite like that burst of falling in love, when you can't stop smiling when you think about your show. *hugs*

Not tl;dr at all, I love provoking a good long response.

Yeah, I mostly feel fanfic as that-which-fixes-canon, too. It confuses me when I encounter fen for whom fic is NOT about that long argument with canon. That long, endless, winding, incestuous argument with canon.

Reading RPF? Don't worry, I still respect you! (in SPN fandom, RPS is actually the more moral option, since the alternative is gay incest)

Yeah, I have a spectrum of fandoms, too. SPN will never touch the way I feel about Torchwood. SPN and Doctor Who are on the next level down. For me, the big hook is a character I fall for, and there isn't anyone on DW or SPN that I've fallen for like I have for Jack. I love Jack like I loved Snape, with all my heart.

The Guinevere story sounds interesting. I'll keep you posted as I start watching the show, so I'll have a context for it. When's your ETA, any idea?
